A little about me ... Hi there and welcome! I’d like to share a little about myself and how I’ve ended up here. Reading for a living! The Dreaded Exposition

So you’ve decided to take up writing. Yay! Welcome to the club! But oh dear, you’re used to taking a factual approach such as with research, report writing, journalism or non-fiction. And when you rest your hands on the keyboard, you’re not sure where to start.

Autofiction or Semi-autobiographical?

Autofiction or Semi-autobiographical?

What is the difference?   Autofiction is a term gaining traction but seemingly with no firm definition. It doesn’t appear as a genre in Amazon for example.

Plotter or Pantser?

Plotter or Pantser?

After asking someone what genre they are writing in, the next very common question writers have for each other is about whether they are a plotter or a pantser.

Colouring-in

Colouring-in. How do you write a scene? Frantic tapping of the keys as the idea pours out of you? Or a slow steady approach, getting everything right as you go?  Perhaps it’s something else entirely. My approach is of the colouring-in style. Some might refer to this as layering, and others may just say they […]

HarperCollins is selling their authors’ work to AI tech

This is bleak reading. Never has good editing and proofreading been more important as writers flock to self-publishing as an alternative to traditional.

Writing supporting characters

Can supporting characters sometimes be more fun to write?   Ever written a supporting character you end up falling in love with? You know, the one with a quirky personality or abrasive manner or even an annoying trait such as always being late/rude/unreliable. My theory is that for some reason we feel a certain freedom […]

Writers’ groups

Are there any advantages to belonging in a writers’ group? In my opinion, there are pros and cons, and the reason for this is down to the effectiveness of the group. So what does a good writers’ group look like? Here are some of my thoughts and observations:
