If you haven’t read this outstanding book from debut novelist Sarah L Richhelm, then do yourself a favour and grab a copy now. From start to finish this book is a ride you don’t want to get off. Set primarily in modern day Prague it tells the story of Keanna Backus, a banshee who is kidnapped by a mafia boss, Arwood Sayer, to help find his missing daughter. Keanna has a deadly wail that can kill, and he makes short work of weaponizing her against her will and to his advantage.
Thank goodness for Silas, a mage, who is also a prisoner and who helps to keep her grounded in the face of the chaos she is now subjected to. Of course, it helps that she already knows him from that one chance encounter she’s never forgotten …
There are so many twists and turns it leaves you with eyes like saucers as you turn yet another page when you should already have gone to work, or sleep. Richhelm is skilled in creating multi-dimensional characters, who are colourful whilst also morally grey and is a master at blurring the boundaries between the ‘goodies’ and the ‘baddies’.
Honestly, you can’t help but be both satisfied and very sad it’s all over, when you reach the epic climax to this book.
